Week 3 Task 2 Diversity in the News

New York City takes an important step in improving school integration by measuring diversity
According to Andre M. Perry, Diversity isn’t simply a student enrollment issue. Inclusion involves the school staff as well. Consequently, the report calls for diversity among “principals, teachers, paraprofessionals, and all other school staff.”

While housing segregation strongly influences the composition of the student body, even in diverse cities, low-income black and brown students are increasingly becoming concentrated in certain schools. This is a result of middle-income, largely white families choosing to cluster in middle- and upper-income schools and neighborhoods in their pursuit of a good education for their kids.

Using standardized testing to measure academic achievement is one way to capture how good a school is, but differences in achievement that promulgate inequality are caused by segregation. Lifting test scores is far from the end goal we perceive it to be. Integration in schools and the workplace, social cohesion, and democratic decision-making are essential goals of a democracy that schools are supposed to encourage. Becoming more educated by being more segregated, which we seem quite comfortable with, should be avoided. Schools should be held accountable to higher-order democratic aims like integration rather than just pushing students to some level of academic progress.

The report tackles the information of wealth and quality by recommending that all schools reflect the diversity of the city and borough they are in. The report asks that schools within each borough of New York City, which is a sub-district, develop student enrollment targets based on the percentage of racial and economic groups, language learners and students with disabilities within the district.

Week 1 Assignment #4 ISTE Standards Review

Review ISTE Standards and write a one page summary including your reflection on the standards.

ISTE standards are made for students and teachers.  ISTE stands for international  society for technology in education ,it's the foremost organization in teaching technology in the classroom.  In total there are 29 ISTE standards that apply to 5 groups such as: students, teachers, administrators, coaches and computer science educators.

ISTE Standards for Students are used by states, districts, schools and innovative teachers to guide the use of technology for instruction by identifying the knowledge, skills and dispositions education stakeholders from every level see as critical for preparing students to live, learn and work in the digital age. ISTE Standards for Teachers focus on skills needed to leverage innovations in pedagogy made possible in technology-powered learning environments.

Group #1 Student Standards

  1. Empowered Learner        4.  Innovative Designer
  2. Digital Citizen                   5. Computational Thinker
  3. Global Collaborator         6. Creative Communicator                                               7.  Global Collaborator

  3. Citizen           6. Facilitator     7.  Analyst
*These standards prepare teachers to teach technology and advanced concepts in the classroom.

After exploring the standards I can understand how important ISTE standards are. By engaging students in real world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools, students are being prepared for life situations outside of the educational setting while learning through the valuable problem-based learning. By using the digital tools, one can guide their students no matter what their specific, preferred learning style.

It is beyond important for teachers to be as fluent as possible in technology systems. Not only does this benefit the students, but it benefits the teachers and the parents as well. Students today have the right to learn in many ways and it is up to the teacher to provide various learning experiences to them through technology systems. By exploring what is offered to teachers through technology, teachers are helping everyone involved in the learning process.

 My Voki introduction: http://tinyurl.com/yy4g93og
Hi everyone my name is Latonia Woods and I am currently a teacher assistant at Challenge Prep Charter School in Far Rockaway.  This is my second semester at NYIT.  I must say that I have learned a lot about incorporating different technologies in my classroom.  This is my second year teaching 4th grade.  Although, I have taught from second to fifth.  I like teaching language arts, Students adapt their communication in relation to audience, task, and  purpose. In order to communicate properly in writing, it is important to study the English language and to understand the rules that govern it. Literacy, defined most simply, is the ability to read and write. New literacy arise from technology such as text messaging, doing podcast or videomaking.  Today we do a lot of communication via internetI have a year and a half to complete my masters. I believe in order to teach a child you have to love a child.  I
